The menu centers on classic American soul food, with hearty meats and traditional sides taking priority over elaborate presentation. Smothered Pork Chops are one of the most talked-about dishes. The pork is served beneath savory gravy, creating the tender, home-style texture expected from a satisfying Southern meal. One recent customer summed it up simply: “The smothered pork chops were so tender and the gravy was perfect.”
Fried Catfish is another signature worth considering. Its appeal comes from the contrast between a crisp fried exterior and moist fish inside, particularly when paired with traditional sides. Meatloaf is also frequently mentioned by diners, while oxtails, fried chicken wings, collard greens, mashed potatoes, dirty rice, baked beans, potato salad, and fried okra broaden the comfort-food selection. One enthusiastic customer specifically praised the meatloaf, catfish, oxtail, wings, collard greens, and mashed potatoes in the same meal experience.
Prices are approachable for this style of restaurant. Current listings generally place Nana J's Soulful Kitchen in the inexpensive range, with typical spending around $10–$20 per person depending on the meal and additions. That makes it attractive for a casual lunch or dinner without requiring a special-occasion budget. Amenities include takeout, table service, outdoor seating, free parking, wheelchair accessibility, highchairs, and credit-card acceptance, making the restaurant practical for families and mixed groups.
The atmosphere reinforces the food's home-cooked character. Customer descriptions mention a cozy setting with wood elements and plants, creating a comfortable environment rather than a formal dining room. Fried okra has also received praise for being fresh and crisp, while the staff and family-run hospitality are recurring highlights in customer feedback.
Compared with some of the best restaurants in Ocean Springs that focus heavily on seafood or contemporary dining, Nana J's Soulful Kitchen offers a different reason to visit: straightforward Southern comfort food with recognizable flavors and filling portions. For anyone craving smothered pork chops, fried catfish, meatloaf, or classic sides in a casual setting, Nana J's Soulful Kitchen is well worth adding to an Ocean Springs dining itinerary. Stop by with family or friends and enjoy a warm introduction to Mississippi-style soul food.

Comida casera, autentica, soulfood. No aptas para dietas. Precio aceptable, y, de momento, no sirven comida dentro, es para llevar. Recomiendo llamar antes
The owner was very nice. I can tell she loves what she does. My favorite items were the dirty rice, collard greens, and macaroni. My mom‘s favorite item was the fried okra. It was very crispy. The food was very delicious the lemonade and tea was rolling as well. I will definitely come back to try more.
I've been trying to eat here for a while but it's always been closed because the food sold out and now I see why! This was by far the most friendliest establishment I have been to in a long time. Southern hospitality doesn't even compare. And don't get me started on the food! The food is absolutely immaculate! Not only does it taste amazing but the amount of food you get for the price is insane! My husband made me put all three plates on a scale together and it came to 12.8 lb of food! I will definitely be coming back! I wish I can give more than five stars!!!
A truly soulful kitchen!! Nana J’s is a soul-filled, flavor extravaganza. A meat and 2 sides, a drink, cornbread and dessert. You may leave here, but it will not be hungry. An older building and gravel-pocked parking lot greet you. A small dining room with alternating black and yellow table “cloths.” Several 4-top tables and a few smaller. Today’s specials are written on the board. Fried ribs! Tender delicious ribs that are battered and fried in singles. Quite amazing! Paired with the homemade bbq sauce and your are one step closer to food coma. The fried chicken wings are hot, fresh, crispy and seasoned well. ALL of the vegetables are seasoned. The okra is crazy good. Fresh and crispy before it’s fried, makes it fried and deliciously crispy after!! The Lima beans are rightly seasoned. The Mac and cheese is homemade cheesy goodness. Rice and gravy is good to boot. This is a place where getting a veggie plate is not a punishment! The cake is amazing. Light, moist, perfectly sweet and a touch of lemon. Just wow!!
Food that is made with love, you can taste it. The smothered pork chops and collard greens are delicious. The food is cooked without salt yet the flavors are sooo so rich. Everything was tender, especially the ribs, the meat falls right off the bone. At this soul food kitchen there is great food, good people, and a true love for cooking.
Finally got to try this place and the wings were okay for me but the OXTAIL babyyyyy were da bomb!!! All of this was almost $50. 10/10 will go back for oxtails, collard greens and the mashed potatoes. The lemonade was also delicious. The lady at the counter was the sweetest and will be back!!
Loved it I just got sides I’m not a big meat person. But they were perfect! Somebody granny in there not playing
Oh my gosh. I'm a huge foodie and you HAVE to go here. Nana J and her whole family run the restaurant and are the most welcoming and fun people around. Then the food. Oh my God the food. The smothered pork chop is hands down the best pork chop I've ever had in my life. Add the collard greens and the mashed potatoes. Divine. The meatloaf is what I now expect every meatloaf should taste like and the fried catfish is out of this world. If you like oxtail, do it. Trust me. The wings are fried but oh so juicy and the cake at the end is delicious. It's a thousand percent worth going to. Truly. Please make the visit. They deserve and earned it.
